JOHN O'REAR
1780 ~ 1867
Son of Daniel & Susan Gooche O'Rear
John O'Rear (V) was the son of Daniel and Susan Gooche O'Rear. He was born in Wake County, North Carolina, near the end of the Revolutionary War. He was approximately ten years old when George Washington was elected first president of the United States in 1789.
By 1800 John was a young man approaching his twenties. The young Federal Government had moved into its beautiful new government home on the Potomac in Washington, D.C. and the nation's economy was thriving. Thomas Jefferson had just been elected third president of the nation and within three years he had doubled the land size of the country with the purchase of the Louisiana territory from France. The O'Rears were farmers and more land was always good news. They would periodically move south or west to take up new farms as the old land lost its fertility.
John and his seven brothers and sisters grew to adulthood on the O'Rear tobacco plantation on the Little River in Wake County, NC. Here John learned the farming business and developed secondary trades, also. In addition to being a farmer, as had been his father Daniel and four or five generations of O'Rears before him, John was a builder and a copper. His specialty was making kegs and barrels but he apparently made his living, at this time, as a contractor and builder. Family tradition tells us that John and his brothers built railroads, grist mills, and several public buildings in Georgia and Alabama in the early 1800's.
John Wilburn (J.W.) O’Rear was born January 2, 1922 and passed from this life on January 17, 2020, at the age of 98.
J.W. enjoyed life to the fullest and was a man of his word. His integrity was his greatest attribute.
He was affectionately called, “ Wiggs”, due to his head of wavy hair .
While in college, he played many sports, and afterwards joined the U.S. Navy and served for 4 years.
J. W. had a love for building, and was a successful home builder for 70 years.
He loved to travel with his wife, Pat, of 13 years.
He will be deeply missed by friends and family.
