  	A Samuel Ayer and a Mary Carlton were married Oct 05 1761 in Boxford, Mass. per that town's vital records thru 1849. No definate proof that this is the same couple. It appears that Sam and Mary had quite a few children. The first 6 were born in Haverhill, Mass. The next 8 were born in Weare, NH. The 3rd from last was named "Carlton". St Johnsbury's histories say of the Goss Hollow Ayers, simply that "Samuel Ayer came at an early day and settled in the NW part of town". I can find no indication of where he came from. [4]
