- Roger Birchard—the maternal grandfather of U.S. President Rutherford Birchard Hayes—was originally buried in Sadler Cemetery (aka First Cemetery and Nelson Cemetery), the earliest burying ground in Saratoga Springs. His 1877 reinterment was arranged by great-grandson James Webb Cook Hayes (1856–1934), and recorded on page 189 in the 1878 History of Saratoga County, New York, as follows:
"CEMETERIES: 1. The old Sadler burial-place, on the hill in the northeast part of the village. This is now [June 1878] a desolate place. The monuments are nearly all removed. At the grave from which the remains of the grandfather of President Hayes were taken in 1877 may still be seen the original stone bearing the inscription, 'In memory of Mr. Roger Birchard, of Wilmington, Vt., who died August 22, 1805, in the forty-eighth year of his age.'"
The topic of Roger’s surname was addressed by editor and publisher Dr. George E. McCracken in his article entitled “Ancestry of President Rutherford B. Hayes” (The American Genealogist, Vol. 56, No. 3; July 1980). The entry, appearing on p. 161, reads as follows:
6. Roger Cornwall alias Birchard, b. Mansfield CT, 25 Dec 1756, and then recorded as illegitimate son of Sarah Jacob without other surname for himself; bapt. at Mansfield, aet. 18, 17 April 1775, as Roger Cornwall, son of Sarah Jacob alias Birchard, who had m. at Mansfield, 25 Jan. 1758, when Roger was precisely 13 months old, Elias Birchard who d. at Mansfield in 1778, at which time Roger was helpful to his mother in settling his step-father’s estate, then called Roger Birchard,…”
Records of Mansfield's First Congregational Church confirm the above-mentioned baptism, in which Roger is indexed under both Jacobs and Cornwall; he received the Sacrament of Baptism with his seven younger half-siblings (Birchard). [2]
