  	James was killed in an automobile accident. His son would be born in September. He was the son of wealthy Hawaiian magnate John Andrew McCandless and Ella Thompson. His sibling was Francis Madge McCandless Hepburn. John and Ella sailed to California aboard the "steamer Great Northern" to attend their son's funeral, which was held in Oakland. His body laid in state at the home of his father-in-law, George Rodolph. His parents were expected to arrive on March 2, 1916.
