Hazel Irene Seymour was born on May 17, 1917, to Ivan Ivory Seymour and Lora May (Dutton) Seymour, homesteaders on Antelope Creek, south of Prairie City, South Dakota. Her parents were ranchers and sheepherders for many years. Hazel was the oldest of six children. Her siblings are Mary Rucastle of Spearfish, SD, Evelyn Hill (deceased), Melvin Seymour (deceased), Dorothy Young of Lincoln, NE, and Coral Seymour (deceased). The sheep wagon in which the family spent its first summers was later restored and moved to the Manning farm south of Hettinger.
Hazel went to country school near her home. During one of those years she was the only student and her teacher boarded with the family. She continued her schooling in Bison, SD and then graduated from Hettinger High School in 1935. She formed close lifetime bonds with classmates including Marcella Miller, Lucille Clement, and Bettie Lindquist.
At 17, Hazel met Joe while attending high school and they fell in love. They were married on March 22, 1936. They celebrated 72 years of marriage on March 22, 2008, just weeks before Joe's death on April 3, 2008.
In addition to farming and ranching, in 1961 they built the Hettinger Country Club and golf course, which they operated until 1994. Hazel and Joe enjoyed the many new friendships which this venture provided.
Hazel was an avid reader, cook, gardener, and artist. She was interested in local, national, and international events and read voraciously. Her fondness for local authors and Dakota history, mysteries, nature, historical fiction, and cookbooks led to the conversion of a bedroom to a book room. She was widely known by family, friends, and golfers for her cooking. Her Swiss steak, prime rib, cream wafers, garden soup, and buttermilk pancakes were family favorites. Caring for her vegetable garden, her flower beds and trees, and her well-fed pets were favorite activities. Her handcrafted quilts, afghans, paintings, and ceramics are cherished by many. Some of Hazel's favorite things were summer rainstorms, a ride in the pasture, listening to KNDC or watching PBS, getting the mail, playing bridge or Scrabble, cooking for the East Mannings, and holding Joe's hand.
Hazel had an abiding strength as well as a gentleness and warmth of character. She will be long remembered for her sweet smile and compassion for others. The family is grateful for the expert and tender care that Hazel and Joe received at the Western Horizon Care Center and Hospital.
Hazel died on April 4, 2009 at the Western Horizon Care Center in Hettinger, North Dakota.
Joe and Hazel had ten daughters and one son: Joan (Howard) George, Worden, MT; Janet (deceased) and Neal Buechler, Chicago, IL; Jacqueline (Arend) Flick, Pasadena, CA; Judy (Dan) Cabrera, Glendale, CA; Karin (Billy) Talbot, Pescadero, CA; Cathleen and Corrine (deceased in infancy); Leah Stetzner, Hettinger, ND; Loah (Jim) Clement, Mandan, ND; Gail (David Richards) Manning, Minneapolis, MN; and Dean (Katie) Manning, Hettinger, ND. Hazel is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Janet, one grandchild, Thomas Clement, sister, Evelyn Hill, brothers, Coral Seymour and Melvin Seymour. [4]
