    • The Drowning of Peach Washington

In the winter of 1939 the Peach Post Office was buried under 235 feet of water.

When Flo was seven she started school In a town called Peach

My mother was born under a cherry tree,
In the hills above the Columbia River
      A hospital was a luxury in 1913

Mom said her mother was making her way
      To the outside privy
When she began to go into labor
Her mother, crippled with rheumatoid arthritis,
'Did the best she could' as she pushed
Her seventh girl Florence Victoria into the world

When 'Flo' was seven she started school
      In a town called Peach

The other kids made fun of the Swedish brood
      (Mom's Sisters and Brothers)
      Who 'talked funny'
      Knew more Swedish words
      than English ones,

"Go back where you came from", they said
      But they learned quickly
And the other kids accepted them
Because there were enough "Johnson kids"
To make up their own baseball team

      And they played baseball
      And other games
      in the town that was
      Named for the Peach trees
That thrived in the sheltered valley
      of mild temperatures

Free from early and late frosts
The orchards with acres of pink flowering
      peach trees,
      Framed against the blue Columbia
      cutting through the verdant valley
Must have looked a little like heaven
To the three hundred souls who lived there

But in the winter of 1939 heaven would be gone
with the closing of The Peach Post Office
The reservoir that would back up Grand Coulee Dam
Would bury the post office site
      under 235 feet of water

The United States Government paid Peach settlers $5000
For each 20 acres of land they owned
      Many settlers owned family farms
      (Like my mother's family)
      Had far less acreage
and had to move to higher ground

      Their houses were burned
      As were the peach orchards
The WPA feared the untended trees
      would become infested with insects
And spread to other trees outside the inundation

Peach became the first cleared town site
      For the water's rise

      In the spring of 1939
the time the Peach trees bloomed
      Florence Victoria became a bride

      The town of Peach
      soon to become
      no more than a memory
      of mom's own private
      Shangri-la
