"Mrs. Packard Services Held At Winthrop
Winthrop — Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home for Mrs. Lora Dutton Packard, 71, by Dr. Max A. Kapp, professor at St. Lawrence University, Canton. The body was placed in Winthrop vault, awaiting burial in the family lot next Spring.
Mrs. Packard, widow of Lucius H. Packard, passed away at her home Friday afternoon, Feb. 4, 1949, after several months illness with a heart ailment.
Mrs. Packard was born in the Old Forge district, Route 2, one of four children of the late Ira and Laura Peck Dutton, who passed away Dec. 5, 1921, and Feb. 26, 1925, respectively. She attended the district school near her home and Brasher and Stockholm High School.
The family moved from their farm to Brasher Falls and later to Winthrop. While living at Brasher Falls, Miss Lora Dutton became the bride of Lucius H. Packard of Madrid, who was then employed in the Edwin F. Russell general store. The wedding was solemnized by the Tate Rev. Edwin B. Saunders, then pastor of the Winthrop Universalist Church. They were attended by the late Delon Dutton, brother of the bride, and Miss Nina Seaver of Winthrop, a cousin of the bride.
After clerking in the Russell store for 13 years, Mr. Packard built a general store on W. Main St., and the couple purchased a house next to the store, which Mr. Packard operated for 34 years. He sold his store in January 1946 and passed away Mar. 29, 1948.
One son, Elwood D. Packard, was born to them in Winthrop. He owns and operates the Busy Corner store at the corner of Main and Maple Sts., here.
Mrs. Packard was a member of Laurentian Chapter 666, Order of the Eastern Star and was a faithful and ardent member of the Winthrop Universalist Church for many years.
Her brother, Delon Dutton, passed away in California Nov. 23, l932, and another brother, Willard Dutton, died Dec. 19, 1938, in New York.
Surviving Mrs. Packard, besides her son, Elwood D., are a grandson, Dwight A. Packard, Winthrop, a sister, Mrs. Lillian D. Seaver, Winthrop; two nieces, Mrs. Mildred Munson, Potsdam; Mrs. Elpha Wilkinson, Winthrop; two nephews, Harold Seaver of Parishville and Willard Dutton of Elmhurst, L. I., and several grandrieces, nephews, and cousins." [5]
