  • Notes
    • Joseph Edward Manning, 93, passed away on April 3, 2008 at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, North Dakota.

Joseph "Joe" Manning was born on July 30, 1914 to Leander Hans Manning and Matilda "Tillie" Josephine Johnson in Montrose, South Dakota. Leander homesteaded in 1908 on the North Fork of the Grand River in South Dakota and later moved his young family to the present site of the Manning farm four miles south of Hettinger, North Dakota. Joe had three siblings, Sister Agnes Marie Manning (deceased), Lawrence Manning (deceased), and Marcella Miller, Hettinger, ND.

Joe graduated from Hettinger High School in 1933 and attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He returned to Hettinger where he married Hazel Irene Seymour on March 22, 1936, worked as a radio and television repairman, and farmed and ranched on the family homestead. During the 1940's, Joe planted many trees for the Soil Conservation Service, contributing to the long-term beauty of the region. He was a jack of many trades and built the family home in 1948 – earth-sheltered and with radiant floor heat –much ahead of its time. In 1961, Joe and Hazel designed and built the Hettinger Country Club and golf course and operated it until 1994 when they sold it to Dean and Katie Manning. Joe and Hazel took great pleasure from their Hettinger Country Club work because it connected them to the wonderful Hettinger community. They deeply appreciated the friendships made during those years and friends and neighbors were always welcome for a cup of coffee, jokes, and conversation.

Joe and Hazel were married for 72 years. They worked side by side for all of those years and were inseparable, holding hands whenever possible. They seldom had a cross word or used a raised voice with each other except, according to Hazel, for a 1978 blizzard when they were snowed in together for nine days. Their long and successful marriage has been an inspiration to all.

To this marriage were born 10 daughters and one son: Joan George (Worden, MT), Janet Buechler (deceased), Jackie Flick (Pasadena, CA), Judy Cabrera (Glendale, CA), Karin Markegard Talbot (Pescadero, CA), Cathleen and Corrine Manning (deceased), Leah Stetzner (Hettinger, ND), Loah Clement (Mandan, ND), Gail Manning (Minneapolis, MN) and Dean Manning (Hettinger, ND).

Joe is survived by 25 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three daughters, Cathleen and Corrine Manning, Janet Buechler, and one grandson, Thomas Clement.

Family was very important to Joe. He never complained, even when sharing a one-bathroom home with his wife and 8 daughters. He adored his only son and last child. Joe and Hazel enjoyed traveling with family and spending winter vacations with their California daughters. Annual family reunions were a highlight.

Joe was dashing and smart and always quick with a joke or a pun. He was loved by many and his gentleness and wit will be sorely missed.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, April 17, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hettinger Country Club, Hettinger, ND with the guidance of the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger.

Memorials may be sent to the Hettinger Golf Association, P.O. Box 30, Hettinger, ND 58639, or to a charity of your choice. [2]
