Wendell "Pete" Stockebrand, 85, of Yates Center, Kansas, died Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington, Kansas.

He was born May 3, 1919, on the family farm near Yates Center, the son of Edward William and Edith Bessie Charlotte (Weide) Stockebrand.

He graduated from Yates Center High School.

On October 8, 1941, he entered the US Army. He served with the 164th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II in the battles and campains in Luzon, the southern Philippines, Bismark, and Archipelago. He was discharged September 30, 1945, and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

On February 3, 1955, he was married to Zelma Marie Dutton in Yates Center, Kansas.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife; a son, David Lee Lawless and wife Sharon of Coweta, OK; a daughter, Kathryn Marie Mauck and husband, Jim, of Kalama, WA; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Maynard and Gerald "Deed", both of Yates Center, KS; and five sisters, Judith Swibold, Topeka, KS, Ann Coltrane, Iola, KS, Gwendolyn Tucker, Winnebago Lake, MO, Jean Cline, Wichita, KS, and nadine Stockebrand of Kansas City, KS.

Three brothers, Milton, Larry Joe, and Kenneth died earlier.

Burial will be June 23, 2004 in Yates Center Cemetery.
