- Elvin E. "Wheel" Telford, 82, passed away May 2, 2009, at Ball Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 23, 1926, in Sandoval, Ill., the son of Sy and Lulu Telford. He was a graduate of Vandalia High School, Vandalia, Ill., and went on to serve in the U.S Navy during World War II. After returning from serving in the Pacific, he returned to Illinois and married Virginia Belton in 1950 in Greenville, Ill. They moved their family to Muncie in 1962.
Elvin worked for N.G. Gilbert Corp. for more than 30 years as a journeyman lineman, progressing into management within the sub-station division. He also worked for Tabor Construction and Burns Corp. Elvin retired in 1994.
Elvin enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and was an avid reader, especially Western novels. He was an enthusiastic St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. Elvin enjoyed travel, both domestic and abroad, including two special trips to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
Elvin is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Laura Telford of Muncie; four children, Jerry (wife, Lisa) Telford of Carmel, Teresa Strait of Indianapolis, Julayne Telford of Oakville and Lynne (husband, Steve) Bragg of Pendleton; three stepsons, Eric (wife, Deborah) Stoker of Augusta, Ga., Duane Stoker of Peoria, Ill., and Glen (wife, Penny) Stoker of Pendleton; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four siblings, Juanita Hediger of Greenville, Ill., Una Funk of Vandalia, Ill., Danny Telford of Sun City West, Ariz., and Donna Gaffney of Mission, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Elvin was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Virginia Telford; two brothers, Herman "Lefty" Telford and Loren "Doc" Telford; and one sister, Leta Telford.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with the Rev. C.A. Dalton officiating. Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery, Middletown. [2]
