• Notes

  Hugh Gardner, Esq., came from Scotland to Ryegate, Vt., in 1784, married Mary Nelson, daughter of William I., February 2, 1791. They had twelve children, William was the eighth, and they had eighty-four grand children-an extremely rare occurence. He died Feb. 1, 1815, in his 64th year. His widow died Oct. 6, 1825, aged 53. Hugh S. Gibson was his eldest grandchild and was born May 29, 1815, so Gardner was dead before any of his grand children were born.
