- John Coatsworth Dutton, Jr. / April 27, 1944 - July 26, 2021
Raleigh, North Carolina - John Coatsworth Dutton, Jr., of Raleigh, North Carolina, died peacefully on Monday, July 26, 2021, following several years of decline from Parkinson's disease. He was preceded in death by his parents John Coatsworth Dutton and Elizabeth Ahlen Dutton and sisters Anne Louise Dutton Wharton and Sally Elizabeth Dutton Anderson. John is survived by his wife of 50 years Marilyn Miller Dutton, sons Gabriel Miller Dutton and Jared Miller Dutton (Meghan Knight), and granddaughters Vivian Grace Dutton, Emily Knight Dutton and Margaret Knight Dutton.
Known to his parents and sisters as "Jack," John was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on April 27, 1944, and moved with his family to Rome, Georgia, in 1954. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout and graduated from Darlington School. He went on to graduate from Harvard University with an A.B. in Economics.
John served in the U.S. Navy before beginning graduate study in Soviet history at Duke University where he met Marilyn Miller and won her heart with his sense of humor. They were married in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
John then taught social studies for three years before returning to Duke to complete his Ph.D. in economics. While at Duke, John and Marilyn welcomed their two sons into the world.
John completed postdocs at Duke University and at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in 1980 John and his family moved to Raleigh where he began teaching economics at North Carolina State University. He retired in 2011.
John was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, full of goodness, kindness and brains. And he was a man of wide-ranging interests and abilities. While teaching at NCSU, he served on the board of and as treasurer of Planned Parenthood Health Systems. Lifelong learner that he was, John took the accounting courses necessary to become a CPA, passed the CPA exam and worked for a local accounting firm for a brief period after he retired. He enjoyed home improvement projects and spent many hours working on the patio, stone walls in the garden, and kitchen and bathroom renovation projects. He loved model airplanes, kites and puzzles of any sort.
A celebration of John's life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in John's memory to Parkinson's Foundation (www.parkinson.org), Transitions LifeCare (www.transitionslifecare.org), or the charity of one's choosing.
