  • Notes
    • Mrs. Eurilia Bartow, one of the oldest residents of Arcade, died at that place Monday evening at the age of eighty-three years. She was the first white female child born in the town of Arcade, and has lived there all of her life time. Her father, Samuel Nickols, was born in Francestown, N.H. in 1786 and in the company with several of the families which earliest settled Wyoming County, removed there in the year 1808. Mrs. Bartow was married in 1832 to Hiram Bartow, and of this marriage six children were born, and of these but two are living, Ralsom S. Bartow of Olean and Jessie Bartow of Hornellsville. Hiram Bartow, the husband of the deceased, assisted in organizing the first temperance society perfected in the county, and was an active member in the case of temperance reform. Mrs. Bartow's mother made the first cheese which was made in the town and sold outside. The deceased entered the Baptist Church at Arcade at the time of its organization, and had always been a consistent Christian and up to within a few recent years, when age prevented, has been one the that church's most helpful members. The funeral was held from the Baptist Church yesterday afternoon, the Rev. J. Vradenburg officiating.
