  RUTH MARIE (BORN RUBY) HERALD (1919 - 1999) Ruth was born and spent her early years on the Perkins County, South Dakota homestead of her Uncle Carl Benjamin "Ben" Ruby (1877-1910) and her Father Richard Frederick "Fred" (1884-1955); On that homestead, the 2 Ruby brothers built a one-room sod house originally built for her Uncle Ben and his Wife Adele (born Schmale) Ruby (1878-1954) and their six children--Fred, Anna, Carl, Paul, Frank, and Bill. In 1910, Ruth's Uncle Ben was killed in a coal mine near the homestead, and a couple of years later Ruth's birth Mother Adele married Ben's brother Fred, and the children all lived together as one loving family. Ruth's Father Fred and Ruth's birth Mother Adele gave birth to six more children--Chris, Richard, Rose, Ruth, Emma, and May, which were all born in that sod house, except May. Another baby, Adele, was stillborn and is laid to rest in the Ruby Family Cemetery next to Chris' Uncle Ben's grave. From her early years and schooling to become a Perkins County teacher in 1939, Ruth and her younger sister Emma began a life's journey when World War II came along. Ruth and Emma both joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in World War II. During World War II, Ruth met and married Tolbert Isaac Herald (1915 - 1977). The couple had 1 daughter, Adele, named after Ruth's Mother. After Tolbert passed away, Ruth moved in with her daughter and son-in-law and Ruth's 3 grandchildren, Janell, Jimmy, and Marc, who affectionately called her "Granny."
