Memorial services for Gurden Morris Barnett will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery Chapel with Pastor Brenda Baalhorn officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Natrona County United Veterans Council and the Wyoming Army National Guard. Inurnment will be at Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery. The family requests no donations.
Gurden M. Barnett, age 91, passed away peacefully with his family at his side June 13, 2010 in Casper, Wyoming. Gurden "Barney" Barnett was born May 25, 1919 in Weaver, Iowa to Gurden and Alfa Morris.
Barney and his older brother Milton grew up in Iowa, where he graduated from Guthrie Center High School in Guthrie Center, Iowa. He furthered his education at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. He later joined the Army Air Force and obtained the rank of Major while serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
After his return from the war, he moved to Guthrie Center with his wife, Esther, where they lived for over 40 years. Barney and Esther had three children, James, John and Jayne. Barney was the President and CEO of Guthrie County State Bank. He also managed the family farm where he enjoyed raising horses, cattle and crops. He was a dynamic figure in the community while serving on local hospital and school boards as well as enjoying his active memberships in the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and Za-Ga-Zig Shriners. Barney was preceded in death by his wife Esther and permanently moved to Wyoming shortly thereafter.
He met and married Geraldine Andersen and moved to Casper, Wyoming, where they have lived for the past 20 years. Barney and his family enjoyed spending time outdoors; including trout fishing, hunting and horse pack trips through the Big Horn Mountains. The other love of his life was the delight he received from time spent with his grandchildren. Both he and Gerry cherished their many friendships throughout the years.
Barney was preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by his wife Gerry, his sons, James Barnett and wife Kathleen and their children, Michael and Jennifer of Spencer, Iowa; John Barnett and wife, Gaila and children, Savanna and Scott of Plano, Texas; daughter, Jayne Schmeling and her daughters, Melissa, husband Jason Schomer and Nichole of Ankeny, Iowa; nephew, Steve Barnett and wife Josephine of Bethleham, Pennsylvania. Barney was also a loving step-father and step-grandfather. In addition, he was blessed with a great grandson, Hayden Schomer. Gurden M. Barnett lived a long and fulfilled life. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
