      WIDELY KNOWN MINE ENGINEER DIES IN CANON

      R. S. Brown Passes Away At Family Home After Two Months' Illness

      Reuben Searles Brown, well-known mining engineer, passed away at the family home, 1028 Greenwood avenue, at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon from angina, an inflammatory affection of the throat, or fauces, from which he had suffered more than two months.

      His condition, which had been serious for some time, became suddenly worse Saturday night. He was stricken with paralysis on may 16 and never recovered from its effects. Members of the family and a few intimate friends were with him when death came.

      Mr. Brown was born at Lockport, N. Y., Oct. 16, 1875, and was in the fifty-seventh year of his age. Following his graduation from the public schools of his native city, he became a student at the state college of mines, or school of technology, in Michigan, from which he received his degree. He came to Colorado in 1914, as a mining engineer and was employed in that capacity at Ohio City, in Gunnison county, for six years, his wife and family living at Gunnison in the meantime.

      In 1921 Mr. and Mrs. Brown and children removed to Canon City to afford the former an opportunity to become engineer and superintendent for the R. D. Webb Lead Products company of Minden, La., which had important holdings and interests at Ilse in Custer clunty, some twenty-five or thirty miles southwest of Canon city. In December, 1928, he was transferred to the management of the company's property at Lake City, Colo., a position he held until stricken by illness.

      Mr. Brown was a man of the highest character and integrity. He was true to his responsibilities and duties to those with whom he was associated in the business; to the nation and to the state and comminity in which he lived. He was guided by the Golden Rule in his dealings with his fellow men.

      Mr. Brown was married to Miss Lola harrison in Minneapolis, Minn., December 24, 1907, who survives him. He also leaves three daughters, Misses Virginia, marion and Dorothy.

      The deceased was a member of the Masonic and Elk lodges here, his membership i the former order having been demitted from Hibbing, Minn., to Canon City. H was also a member of the First Presbyterian church here and of the Colorado State Mining congress.

      The body will lie in state at the home 1028 Greenwood avenue, from 2 till 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.

      No date has been announced for the funeral service.

      MASONS TO HOLD RITUAL AT GRAVE FOR R. S. BROWN

      Funeral services for R. S. Brown, widely known mining engineer, who died at his home at 1028 Greenwood avenue here Sunday afternoon, will be held at the Wilson chapel Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

      The Rev. William M. Orr, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will conduct the service. members of the masonic lodge, of which Mr. Brown was a member, will attend the services in a body and hold their ritual at the grave.

      Lawrence Fisher will sing "Old Rugged Cross" and "Lead Kindly Light." Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery.

      Mr. Brown had been in ill health for some time. His death resulted from a paralytic stroke which he suffered on May 16.

      HUNDREDS ATTEND FUNERAL RITES OF MINING ENGINEER

      Hundreds of sorrowing friends, many of them from other sections of the state, gathered at Wilson chapel Wednesday afternoon to pay final respects to one of southern Colorado's most widely-known mining engineers, R. S. Brown, who died at his home here Sunday afternoon.

      The Rev. William M. Orr, pastor of the First Presbyterian church here, conducted final services for Mr. Brown. Members of the Masonic lodge attended in a body and presided at the special services at the grave.

      Beautiful floral offerings banked the casket on all sides, and the crowd that filled the chapel was one of the largest to attend a funeral service in Canon City in recent weeks.

      Lawrence Fisher sang "The Old Rugged Cross," and "Lead Kindly Light." He was accompanied by Miss Mary Hodgin.

      Active pallbearers were Charles Billey, Lloyd Egbers, L. E. McKee, Alex Walker, Will Griffiths and Guy James. Honorary pallbearers were James T. Locke, Dr. Theodore Ashley, W. H. Dozier, Dr. C. H. Graves, Len Ryan and Theodore M. Harding.

      Interment was in Lakeside cemetery.
