  • Notes
    • "History and Genealogy of the Thomas Stone Family" by Earl H. Antes:

(Following the death of her husband in 1790), except for bills paid to Dr. Hunter for doctoring Mrs. Stone, we hear no more of the family until 6 April 1804, when a new crisis arose. Mrs. Stone had evidently found a home with some man — "who was willing to father children, but not take care of them—" for she now appears with three illegitimate offspring, a twin boy and girl, and another daughter. Ephraim Morrill bid them all off; the boy Luke until 21 for $5.75, and girl Lydia until 18 for $25, and the widow and her youngest daughter for one year at $35.00.

This is the last we hear of them until 1818 when the widow married Charles Greenfield. With him she moved to Boscawen, Merrimack Co., New Hampshire. Life must still have been hard, for when he died in 1830, the selectmen of Boscawen put her in their poorhouse, where she remained until her death."

According to the James Stone's Revolutionary War Pension records, Lydia and Charles Greenfield were married by a Justice of the Peace. She later received a widow's pension for her husband's military services and bayonet injury suffered in the Revolutionary War. The Pension rate was $80.00/ year, retroactive to 14 Mar 1831. Ironically this pension was granted 28 Aug 1837 less than 2 weeks before she died on 9 Sep 1837! The total amount received was $523.55, which most likely was eventually divided between her 3 children living at the time.

In 1800 widow Lydia (Abbott) Stone was living in Henniker, along with 1 female less than 10 years of age (unknown) and a male over 45 years of age, (father-in-law Thomas Stone). She was remarried 17 May 1818 to Charles Greenfield in Henniker, NH. He died there in 1830.

She was chronically ill in her later years and had been living for some time before her death in an Almshouse or Poor Farm in Boscawen, NH. The time and the reason for her move to Boscawen is not known, although many Stone and Greenfield families, possibly related to her, lived in that vicinity. However, most likely she moved there because of financial difficulties, requiring her to be placed in the Almshouse. [1]
