Eleanor Hume Offutt O'Rear, a nationally known authority on historic preservation and restoration, died Sunday at Lexington's Lucille Parker Markey Cancer Center. She was 62.

Mrs. O'Rear was involved in the preservation and restoration of many old homes in Kentucky, as well as in other states. She was considered an expert in late-18th and early-19th century Kentucky furnishings and decorative arts, friends said.

She had been chairman of the Bodley-Bullock House Restoration Committee in Lexington and of Liberty Hall in Frankfort. She also was a member of the Locust Grove Board of Advisors in Louisville and co-chairman of the Dinsmore Homestead Foundation Inc. in Burlington.

Mrs. O'Rear also was active in the restorations of the Orlando Brown House and Vest-Lindsey House in Frankfort and the Hunt-Morgan House in Lexington.

She received the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation's John Wesley Hunt award for lifetime service to historic preservation as well as a preservation award from the Ida Lee Willis Memorial Foundation.

"I think Kentucky's lost one of its finest ladies," former Gov. Edward T. "Ned" Breathitt said yesterday.

"I hadn't been in office two days before she paid a call on me and my wife, and in her wonderful, cheery way proceeded to persuade me that the commonwealth would collapse if we didn't save the Corner of Celebrities," an area of historic homes in Frankfort.

She was an expert in antiques, who followed in the footsteps of her late mother, Eleanor Marian Hume Offutt , who ran The Wilderness Trail antiques store in Frankfort. Mrs. O'Rear ran that business for a time and later owned The Copper Fox in Midway. She continued to sell antiques at shops in Lexington.

Mrs. O'Rear, a Franklin County native, had been a member of the Kentucky Heritage Council, Historic Preservation Review Committee for the National Register, the Museum Committee of the Kentucky Historical Society and the Office of Historical Properties Task Force. She also had served on the boards of the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation and Historic Ashland Inc.

She had been a regional adviser to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and had written articles for Antiques magazine.

Mrs. O'Rear also was a founder and had been vice president of the Woodford Save the Land Association.

She received a bachelor's degree from Vassar College and a master's degree in community development for the University of Louisville.

Mrs. O'Rear, who lived at Cleveland Road in Lexington, is survived by her husband, Edward C. O'Rear II; two sons, Edward C. O'Rear III of Lexington and John Offutt O'Rear of Woodford County; and a daughter, Eleanor Peavy of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Woodford County. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Frankfort Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Orlando Brown House in Frankfort.

Rogers Funeral Home in Frankfort is in charge of arrangements.

Contributions are suggested to the Lucille Parker Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, Woodford Save the Land Association or a favorite preservation group. [2]
