  • Notes
    • Master Sergeant (MSG) William Walter "Bill" Ruby (1909 - 1983) spent his early years on the South Dakota homestead his birth Father Carl Benjamin "Ben" Ruby (1877-1910) and his Uncle Richard Frederick "Fred" (1884-1955) built; On that homestead, the brothers Ruby built a one-room sod house for Ben and his Wife Adele (born Schmale) Ruby (1878-1954) and their six children--Fred, Anna, Carl, Paul, Frank, and Bill.

Bill's birth Father Ben was killed in a coal mine near the homestead, and a couple of years later his birth Mother Adele married Ben's brother Fred, who raised his nephew Bill and his brothers and sister as his own.

Bill's Uncle Fred and his birth Mother Adele gave birth to six more children--Chris, Richard, Rose, Ruth, Emma, and May, all born in that sod house except May. Another baby, Adele, was stillborn and is laid to rest in the Ruby Family Cemetery next to Ben's grave.

Military Service: Army Records indicate that William Walter Ruby enlisted in the Regular Army of the United States January 20, 1933; Bill served 12 years 7 months and 15 days by Sep 13, 1945, when he re-enlisted, holding the rank of Master Sergeant, serving as a Mess (Cook) Sergeant and Quartermaster Supply Sergeant.

Bill married Francis Elizabeth (born Cosgrove) Ruby (1912 - 2004) on April 5, 1940. The couple raised 2 daughters, Anne and Jean.

After receiving his Honorable Medical Discharge from the U.S. Army, Bill and family lived south of Hot Springs at Provo, South Dakota. Bill had a job as the head high school custodian for eight years at a public high school with 700 students and 35 teachers. Bill had a boat and trailer, liked to fish. Bill sometimes pulled his boat down to the Chamberlain area to fish on the large Missouri River dams.
