  • Notes
    • Judge Taylor as he was called, was named Lyndel at his birth, but from boyhood became known as Linn and through the years wrote his name in that form. He was a great-great grandson of Capt. John Stowell of Guilford, who commanded a company of men from that town in Seth Warner's regiment in the Battle of Bennington. He graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1888, and the following year engaged in the insurance business with his father. He was for many years the marshal of the parades of the Brattleboro High School and of the memorial day services. Judge Taylor was long active in the affairs of Col. H.E. Taylor camp, Sons of Union Veterans, and over a period of years, as the ranks of the G.A.R. veterans thinned, the arrangements for Memorial Day observances were largely in his hands. He was prominently identified with the Vermont Association of Local Fire Insurance Underwriters from its organization in 1906. His service in the Vermont National Guard began in April, 1887, when as a high school boy, he enlisted in Company I. He served six years, receiving an honorable discharge when his enlistment expired in July 1893. In October, 1902, he was appointed aide-de-camp with the rank of colonel on the staff of Gov. john G. McCullough. The appointment as regimental quartermaster, with the rank of captain, came to Judge Taylor in May, 1909, when J. Gray Estey of Brattleboro was colonel of the regiment. Adjutant General Herbert T. Johnson in a general order in February, 1933, placed Judge Taylor on a retired list at his own request, with the rank of major. Major Taylor was a prominent figure in the Masons in the area. As a Republican, he attended local and state conventions as a delegate. Another of his accomplishments was as a trustee of the Vermont Savings bank and as president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed assistant judge of Windham County court by Gov. William H. Wills. Judge Taylor and his wife attended the Unitarian church, which is a part of All Souls church. [4]
